Pot Lights in Toronto Homes

Toronto has the widest range of ceilings we work in, and the ceiling decides the job. A 1912 semi off Roncesvalles with lath-and-plaster and a finished room above is a completely different install from a rebuilt detached in Lawrence Park with an open attic over it.

Plaster ceilings handled properly

Lath-and-plaster cracks and crumbles at the edge of a cut. We score it, cut slow, and agree the making-good in writing first.

Layouts, not grids

Lights placed over counters, art and seating rather than spaced evenly across the floor. Fewer fixtures, better placed, usually costs less too.

Downtown access problems

Semis and row houses often have a finished room above every ceiling. We plan the fishing route before quoting, not on the day.

Dimmers matched to drivers

LED-compatible dimmers checked against the fixture maker's list before installation, so nothing flickers afterwards.

What Toronto Ceilings Throw At You

Three things come up on Toronto pot light jobs more than anywhere else we work.

Finished basement media wall with recessed pot lights and LED-lit built-in shelving
Toronto: what we actually findIn pre-war Toronto the ceiling material is the budget. Plaster takes longer per light than drywall and needs more making good — get that settled in writing before anyone starts.

Lath-and-plaster

Pre-war Toronto ceilings are plaster over wood lath. A hole saw that sails through drywall will crack plaster well beyond the cut and can pop the keys behind it. It takes longer per light and needs more making good — which should be in the quote, not a surprise.

Nothing above but another room

In a semi or a row house, most ceilings have a finished floor above rather than an attic. Every run is fished blind through a closed cavity, and that is where the cost sits.

Old branch circuits

On a pre-1960 Toronto house the existing lighting circuit may be knob-and-tube or an early two-wire run with no ground. You cannot extend knob-and-tube, so the honest answer is often a new circuit rather than a tap into what is there.

How We Run a Toronto Install

01

Mark the layout on the ceiling

We chalk the positions and you look at them before a hole is cut. Changing a mark costs nothing; moving a fixture afterwards does not.

02

Confirm what feeds it

We check whether the existing circuit can legally and safely carry the new fixtures, and price a new circuit if it cannot.

03

Cut, wire, make good

Fixtures set level and aligned along sightlines, tested on the dimmer, ESA notification filed under our licence.

Toronto Neighbourhoods We Serve

We work right across Toronto. If your street is not listed it almost certainly still counts — see pot light installation in full, or our Toronto electricians page.

Toronto Pot Light FAQs

Can you put pot lights in a plaster ceiling?

Yes, and it is most of what we do in older Toronto. Plaster needs a different technique from drywall — scored and cut slowly so the keys behind the lath do not let go. Expect a little more making good than a drywall ceiling, and agree in writing who patches and to what standard before work starts.

My house is a semi with bedrooms above. Is that a problem?

It is the harder case, not an impossible one. With a finished room above rather than an attic, every wiring run is fished blind through a closed cavity. It takes longer and usually needs a few more access openings, which are then patched. We look at the route before quoting rather than discovering it mid-job.

Can pot lights go on my existing lighting circuit?

Sometimes. It depends on what is already on that circuit and what it is wired in. On pre-1960 Toronto houses we often find knob-and-tube or an early two-wire run with no ground — and you cannot legally extend knob-and-tube. In that case a new circuit from the panel is the right answer.

How many pot lights for a Toronto living room?

Fewer than a grid suggests. Keep fixtures two to three feet off the walls, space them roughly half the ceiling height apart as a starting point, and light the seating area, fireplace and art rather than the floor. In a typical Toronto living room that is often six, not ten.

Do I need an ESA notification for pot lights in Toronto?

Yes. Adding recessed lighting alters the permanent wiring, which requires notification to the Electrical Safety Authority — not a City of Toronto permit. We file it under our licence, ECRA/ESA 7014949, and meet the inspector.
