Pool & Hot Tub Wiring in Toronto & the GTA

Bonding, GFCI protection and clearance rules done to the letter — pool and hot tub work carries its own ESA inspection category for good reason.

What We Wire Outdoors

Water and electricity is the one area of residential work where the Code is least forgiving, and where local rules sometimes go further than the provincial minimum. Pool and hot tub installations have their own ESA notification category and their own inspection — they are not treated as ordinary alterations.

Hot tub circuits

A dedicated circuit, correctly sized, with the disconnect located where the Code requires it rather than where it is convenient.

Pool equipment

Pumps, heaters and lighting, with the bonding grid that ties the whole installation together.

Outdoor receptacles and lighting

GFCI-protected, in enclosures rated for the location, on circuits that are not shared with something indoors.

Landscape and feature lighting

Low-voltage and line-voltage runs planned around the landscaping rather than trenched through it afterwards.

The Rules That Actually Bite

Three requirements cause more failed inspections on outdoor work than anything else.

Worth knowingPool and hot tub work sits in its own ESA notification category with its own inspection. If a quote treats it as an ordinary outdoor circuit, that is a warning sign.

Bonding

Every conductive part in and around a pool has to be bonded together so there is no potential difference between them. This is the requirement most commonly missed by installers who treat a pool as an ordinary outdoor circuit, and it is not something that can be added tidily afterwards.

GFCI protection

Ground-fault protection is mandatory on the circuits serving this equipment. It is the difference between a fault being an inconvenience and being a serious injury.

Clearances

Conductors have to keep defined distances from the water. Oakville goes further than the provincial Code and prohibits conductors above pools outright, which dictates how a feed is routed to a detached garage or a cabana.

How We Approach It

01

Assess the site and the load

We look at where the equipment sits, how the feed will reach it, and whether the existing service can carry pool or hot tub load on top of what is already connected.

02

Design around the clearances

The route is settled before anything is trenched — particularly where a pool sits between the house and an outbuilding.

03

Install, bond, inspect

Bonding grid, GFCI protection, correct disconnect location, then the ESA inspection this category requires.

Pool & Hot Tub Wiring FAQs

Does a hot tub need its own circuit?

Yes. A hot tub needs a dedicated circuit sized for the unit, with GFCI protection and a disconnect located within the distance the Code specifies of the tub. It also needs to be accounted for in the service's calculated load — a hot tub is a substantial continuous draw and is frequently what tips a service into needing an upgrade.

What is bonding, and why does it matter for pools?

Bonding ties all the conductive parts in and around the pool together so there is no voltage difference between them — ladders, the water itself, reinforcing steel, equipment. It is not the same as grounding. Missed bonding is the most common serious defect in pool installations and it is very difficult to add after the deck is finished.

Can I run power to a pool house past the pool?

Not above the water, and in Oakville not above the pool at all — the town applies a rule stricter than the provincial Code. Elsewhere, defined clearances from the water apply. In practice the feed is routed around, which is entirely workable but has to be planned before anything is trenched.

Does pool wiring need an ESA inspection?

Yes, and it has its own notification category separate from general alterations. A licensed contractor files it and arranges the inspection. This is an area where unpermitted work tends to surface later, either at sale or in a claim.

Will a hot tub need a panel upgrade?

Sometimes. It depends on the calculated load of the whole house, not just the tub. A gas-heated home with a modern 200-amp service usually has room. A 100-amp service already carrying central air and an EV charger frequently does not. We calculate before recommending.
