Panel Upgrades for East York Homes

East York has the oldest housing of anywhere we work: 78.8% predates 1981 and 48.8% predates 1961. That makes panel and service upgrades the most common job we do here, and it makes the assessment matter, because on stock this age the panel is rarely the only thing that needs attention.

Leaside's 1930s services

Leaside's detached homes were built fast and built well, but on service sizes that suited 1938 rather than 2026.

Old East York's smaller homes

Tighter lots and smaller services, where 100 amps is sometimes genuinely the right answer rather than a compromise.

Full service entrances

On housing this old the mast, weatherhead and meter base usually need replacing alongside the panel.

Sized for what is next

Charger, heat pump, basement suite — we size the service once for everything you are planning.

East York's Housing, Era by Era

East York was built in distinct waves, and each behaves differently when the service is upgraded.

East York: what we actually findToronto Hydro territory. East York's south boundary sits several blocks north of the Danforth. Overhead services are capped at 200 amps.

Leaside, 1929 to 1938

Leaside went from 68 houses in 1929 to 328 built in 1938 alone. That produced a remarkably consistent stock of solid detached homes — and a remarkably consistent set of original service sizes now reaching the end of their usefulness.

Old East York, pre-1961

Just under half of East York predates 1961. Smaller homes, smaller services, and in many cases a fuse panel that has been worked around rather than replaced.

An older grid upstream

East York sits downstream of infrastructure that has had its own failures — an upstream transformer station fault in August 2026 affected roughly 31,000 customers including parts of East York and Thorncliffe. Your panel is not the grid, but a well-built service entrance is what protects the house when the grid misbehaves.

How an East York Upgrade Runs

01

Verify what the service actually is

On stock this old the panel label and the real service size often disagree. We measure rather than assume.

02

Assess the whole entrance

Mast, weatherhead, meter base and grounding — on East York houses these are usually part of the job, and we price them up front.

03

File, install, inspect

ESA notification under our licence, Toronto Hydro isolation scheduled, changeover in a day, inspection attended.

East York Panel Upgrade FAQs

Does my Leaside house need a 200-amp service?

Often, but not automatically. A Leaside detached home with gas heat, gas cooking and gas hot water can run well on 100 amps. What pushes it to 200 is electric heat, an EV charger, a heat pump, air conditioning plus a finished basement, or an addition. We size it against what you actually have and plan.

Is my 1930s panel dangerous?

Not by age alone. What matters is condition: heat or discolouration around breakers, over-fusing, double-tapped terminals, corrosion, or a panel so full that anything new means a tandem breaker. Those are the findings that justify replacement, and we will tell you if we do not see them.

How long does a panel upgrade take in East York?

The changeover itself is typically a single working day. The longer part is Toronto Hydro scheduling the isolation, which usually runs to several weeks. We file as soon as scope is agreed because that wait is the project's critical path.

I am in Thorncliffe Park. Can you upgrade my panel?

Thorncliffe is almost entirely high-rise, and the electrical infrastructure in an apartment building is the corporation's rather than an individual owner's. Panel work there runs through the building. We will tell you that up front rather than book a visit that cannot go anywhere.

Is East York the same as the Danforth?

No — East York's southern boundary sits several blocks north of Danforth Avenue. Homes right on the Danforth are generally in old Toronto. The housing age and electrical realities are similar and we work both areas.
