Pot Light Installation in Toronto & the GTA

Recessed lighting planned room by room rather than gridded — IC-rated fixtures, dimmers that actually dim, and ceilings put back properly.

What We Install

Pot lights are the most requested job in Toronto homes and the one with the widest spread in quality. The difference is rarely the fixture — it is whether anyone planned the layout, checked the ceiling, and specified a dimmer that matches the driver.

Retrofit into finished ceilings

The common job. We fish the runs, cut clean, and agree who patches and to what standard before anything starts.

New construction and renovations

Where the ceiling is open, we lay circuits out properly and leave room for the lighting to be controlled in layers.

Kitchens and principal rooms

Lights placed over the working edge of a counter, not centred in the walkway, so you are not standing in your own shadow.

Dimming and controls

LED-compatible dimmers checked against the fixture maker's compatibility list before installation, not after the flicker starts.

What Decides the Job

Three things drive almost the entire difference between a tidy install and a disruptive one.

Worth knowingLayout is the part that gets skipped. Fewer, better-placed fixtures on good dimmers almost always beat more fixtures on a grid — and it costs less.

What is above the ceiling

A top-floor ceiling with an accessible attic is the best case. A ceiling with a finished room above means every run is fished blind. This is the single biggest variable and it is not visible from below.

IC rating

Where fixtures will sit in contact with insulation — any top-floor ceiling under an insulated attic — they must be IC-rated. A non-IC fixture blanketed in insulation is a genuine fire risk, and it is the defect we find most often on budget installs.

Ceiling material

Drywall cuts cleanly with a hole saw. Lath-and-plaster does not: it cracks, crumbles at the edge, and the keys behind can let go well beyond the hole. Plaster ceilings take longer and need more making good.

How We Do It

01

Walk the room

We look at joist direction, what is above, the ceiling material and where the switches are. Then we mark a layout on the ceiling so you can see it before a hole is cut.

02

Specify properly

Fixture, colour temperature, CRI, IC rating and a dimmer confirmed compatible with that driver. Getting this right at the start prevents the two most common complaints.

03

Install and make good

Circuits run, fixtures set level and aligned, everything tested on the dimmer, ESA notification filed under our licence and the site left clean.

Pot Light Installation FAQs

How many pot lights does a room need?

Fewer than most grid layouts suggest. A common starting point is spacing fixtures roughly half the ceiling height apart and keeping them two to three feet off the walls, but the better approach is to light surfaces and tasks rather than floor area, and to put feature lighting on its own switch.

Do pot lights need to be IC-rated?

They must be wherever they will be in contact with thermal insulation, which in practice means any top-floor ceiling with an insulated attic above. IC-rated fixtures carry a thermal protective device and are tested for that condition. Non-IC fixtures must be kept clear of insulation by the distance the manufacturer specifies.

Will installing pot lights damage my ceiling?

The fixture openings are cut cleanly and the trim covers them. The question is the wiring between them — where runs cross joists or the cavity is closed, some additional openings are usually needed and then patched. Plaster is less forgiving than drywall. We agree who patches, and to what standard, in writing before starting.

Why do LED pot lights flicker on a dimmer?

Almost always a mismatch between the LED driver and the dimmer. Many older dimmers were built for incandescent loads with a minimum load far above what a few LEDs draw. We specify an LED-compatible dimmer checked against the fixture manufacturer's list before installation.

Do I need an ESA notification for pot lights?

Yes. Adding recessed lighting alters the permanent wiring of the home, and alterations require notification to the Electrical Safety Authority. It is not a municipal building permit — in Ontario the process runs through the ESA. We file it under our licence and meet the inspector.
