From Our Shop to Your Door

We are based on McRoberts Avenue, inside York. For most of these streets the drive is measured in minutes — the entire point of calling a local crew at 2am.
01

We pick up

The emergency line rings a person, not a queue. Tell us what you're seeing and we'll say straight away whether to shut the circuit off, leave the house, or wait for us.

02

We're already here

Our shop is on McRoberts Avenue. For most of York that's a drive measured in minutes, not the cross-city crawl a downtown or 905-based crew is facing.

03

We make it safe, then right

The immediate hazard gets isolated first. Then you get the actual diagnosis and a price, before anything else is touched.

What Fails in York Homes

Overheating Fuse Panels

60-amp fuse services are still working in York houses built in the 1920s. When one finally gives up it usually announces itself with heat, a smell, or a scorch mark at the box.

Knob-and-Tube Splice Failures

Century-home wiring joins were twisted and taped, not wire-nutted. Ninety years of heat cycling eventually opens one up — usually inside a ceiling, usually at the worst moment.

Flooded Basement Panels

Rockcliffe-Smythe and the Black Creek floodplain flood repeatedly. If water is anywhere near your panel, don't go down there — the utility has to kill the service before anyone touches it.

Fuse panels that run hot46.7% of York's homes predate 1961 and 8.9% need major repairs, the highest share in the old city. Sixty-amp fuse services are still live here, and the emergency is usually not the fuse blowing but the panel getting hot enough to smell before it does.

Overloaded Kitchen Circuits

A 1920s house wired for a lamp and a radio now runs an induction range and a dishwasher. Something has to give, and it gives at the weakest connection.

Apartment & Walk-Up Faults

Weston and Mount Dennis are heavily apartment stock. In-suite panel faults, dead circuits and building-access coordination are routine work for us here.

Storm Damage to Old Masts

Service masts on hundred-year-old houses have been up there a long time. Wind takes them down, and the power stays off until a licensed contractor puts one back.

Toronto Hydro, or Us?

If the whole street is dark, it's a grid outage — call Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000 and press 1, staffed around the clock, and check their outage map for restoration times. If it's only your house, the fault sits on your side of the meter and no amount of waiting will fix it. That's us: 647-406-7046.

The part that catches York homeowners out: you own the service mast, the weatherhead and the meter base. Toronto Hydro owns the wire running to it and the meter itself. So when a storm rips the mast off a Silverthorn semi, Toronto Hydro physically cannot reconnect you until a licensed contractor rebuilds it, files with the ESA and gets authorization. We handle all four steps — and if a temporary repair restores power, the permanent one has to follow within 30 days.

If the whole street is dark it is a Toronto Hydro problem, and we cannot fix it faster than they can. If it is only your house, it is ours.

Emergencies in York's Older Homes

Nearly half of York’s houses were built before 1961, and roughly 9% are flagged as needing major repairs — the highest rate of any Toronto district. That combination produces a specific set of emergencies: overheating at 60-amp panels and fuse boxes, failing knob-and-tube splices in ceilings, and circuits that were never designed for a modern kitchen. We see them constantly, and we’re usually only minutes away.

York Emergency FAQs

How fast can you actually get to me in York?

Faster than almost anyone, because we're based here — our shop is on McRoberts Avenue between Eglinton West and Rogers Road. We're not dispatching from Markham or Mississauga. Emergency calls are prioritized 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays.

My basement flooded and the panel is down there. What do I do?

Do not go into the water. If it's above the level of outlets, baseboard heaters or anywhere near the panel, the ESA's guidance is to stay out and have the utility disconnect the service first. Call Toronto Hydro to kill the power, then call us. Anything that got wet — panel, breakers, outlets, appliances — has to be assessed before it's re-energized, not just dried off and switched back on.

The lights in my 1920s house flicker when the furnace starts. Emergency?

Not tonight, probably — but don't ignore it either. A brief dip when a big motor starts is normal. Lights across the whole house dimming noticeably, or flickering that's getting worse, can indicate a loose neutral or a service that's failing, and those do become emergencies. Worth a proper look this week rather than next year.

A tree took my service mast down. Who pays?

You own the mast, so the repair is yours to arrange — but check your home insurance before assuming the cost. Storm damage to a service mast is commonly covered subject to your deductible, and insurers generally require a licensed electrical contractor to do the work anyway. We'll give you documentation for the claim.

Do you handle emergencies in apartment buildings?

Yes. Weston and Mount Dennis are largely apartment stock, and we're used to in-suite work in older buildings — coordinating access with superintendents and property managers, carrying the insurance certificates buildings ask for, and working within building rules even on short notice.
