Toronto · EV Charger Installation
Level 2 charger installation for Toronto homes — load calculation first, so you find out what your service can carry before anyone sells you a panel.
Toronto’s housing stock is the widest in the GTA, and so is the range of answers to ‘can my panel take a charger’. A 1920s semi off Roncesvalles on a 100-amp service and a rebuilt detached in Lawrence Park with 200 amps are completely different installations, and only one of them needs a conversation about capacity.
We calculate the service under the Canadian Electrical Code before quoting hardware. Empty breaker spaces tell you nothing about what the service can carry.
A 32-amp charger on its own 240-volt circuit covers almost every Toronto household overnight, including long commutes from the west end.
Where the calculation is short, a load management device is usually far cheaper than upgrading the service. We will tell you when that applies.
Detached garages behind older Toronto lots mean a buried feed and often a sub-panel. We price that route properly rather than discovering it on the day.

Three things come up on Toronto charger jobs far more than anywhere else we work.

Toronto Hydro caps overhead residential services at 200 amps. If a charger tips you past what the service can carry and the house needs more than 200, the feed has to go underground — a different project with civil work attached.
Plenty of pre-war Toronto houses still have the meter in the basement or a vestibule. If a charger triggers a service upgrade, that meter has to move outside, and it needs to be in the plan from the start.
Downtown lots frequently have no driveway at all, or a mutual drive shared with a neighbour. Where the car parks decides the whole route, so we establish that before anything else.

We look at the panel, the service size, the parking and the route, then run the load calculation. You get a straight answer on capacity before you choose hardware.
We file the ESA notification under our licence and book the work. Most installs need no utility involvement at all — that is only when the service itself changes.
Dedicated circuit, charger mounted and terminated, tested under load, and walked through with you. Inspection follows and we meet the inspector.
We handle EV charger installation right across Toronto. If your street is not listed, it almost certainly still counts — see the service in full or take a look at our Toronto electricians page.
Very often, yes. A 100-amp service in a gas-heated Toronto home with a gas range and gas water heating will frequently support a 32-amp Level 2 charger. It is decided by a calculated load, not by counting empty breaker spaces. Where the calculation is short, load management is usually cheaper than a service upgrade.
You need an ESA notification, not a City of Toronto electrical permit — electrical work in Ontario is regulated by the Electrical Safety Authority. We file it under our licence, ECRA/ESA 7014949, and meet the inspector.
Most Toronto installs are a single day where the charger is reasonably close to the panel. A detached garage across a yard means a buried feed and usually a second day. Where the service itself has to change, Toronto Hydro scheduling adds weeks.
Usually, but the route matters more than the hardware. We look at where the car actually sits, how the cable reaches it and whether a feed has to cross property you do not own. That last point is worth settling early.
Not in 2026. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program does not cover chargers or panel upgrades, and the federal residential charger programs are closed. There is a vehicle rebate, but nothing toward the circuit.
