EV Charging in York Homes

We are based on McRoberts Avenue, so York is not a service area for us — it is the neighbourhood. That matters on charger work because York’s housing is the kind where the answer depends on details you only find by looking: how the lot is laid out, where the car actually parks, and what ninety years of alterations did to the service.

A calculation, not a guess

Nearly half of York's housing predates 1961. Service sizes vary wildly, and the only way to answer the capacity question is to calculate it.

Working around the lot

Streetcar-suburb lots are narrow and deep. Parking is often at the rear off a lane, which changes the route entirely.

Upgrading only if needed

If the service genuinely cannot carry a charger we will say so — but we look at load management first, because it is usually the cheaper answer.

Rear garages and buried feeds

A garage at the back of a York lot means a trench, a feed and often a small sub-panel. We quote that as its own line rather than burying it.

York's Housing and What It Means for Charging

York was built out as a streetcar suburb between roughly 1913 and 1940, and the electrical consequences are still visible.

Pre-1961 stock, 46.7%

Close to half of York's homes predate 1961, which is when services this small were normal. Many have been upgraded since; plenty have not, and a charger is often what finally forces the question.

The highest major-repair rate

York records the highest share of dwellings needing major repairs among the areas we serve, at 8.9%. On charger jobs that shows up as service entrances and panels that need attention before anything new lands on them.

Lane parking

A great many York houses park at the rear off a mutual drive or a public lane. The distance from panel to car is the single biggest cost variable here, and it is not visible from the street.

How We Work in York

01

We are minutes away

From McRoberts we reach most of York in under fifteen minutes, which makes the site visit before quoting practical rather than a favour.

02

Assess the service honestly

We calculate the load and look at the condition of what is already there. On pre-war York services those are two separate questions.

03

Install once, properly

Dedicated circuit, correct conductor for the run length, tested under load, ESA notification filed under our licence.

York Neighbourhoods We Serve

We handle EV charger installation right across York. If your street is not listed, it almost certainly still counts — see the service in full or take a look at our York electricians page.

York EV Charging FAQs

Are you actually based in York?

Yes — our shop is on McRoberts Avenue. Most of York is ten to fifteen minutes away, which is why we can look at a job before quoting it rather than pricing off a photo.

My York house still has a fuse panel. Can I get a charger?

Not onto the fuse panel itself. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt breaker, and fuse services are generally too small in any case. In practice a charger on a fuse-panel house means a service and panel upgrade first, and it is worth doing once for everything you are planning.

The garage is at the back of the lot. Does that cost more?

Yes, and it is usually the largest single variable on a York install. A rear garage means a buried feed across the lot and often a small sub-panel. Conductor size also has to account for the run length so voltage drop stays within limits.

Will a charger overload an older York service?

Not if it is calculated first. That is exactly what the load calculation is for. Where the result is tight, a load management device lets the charger run while preventing it from ever pushing the service past its rating.

Do I need to upgrade my panel for an EV charger?

Sometimes, but less often than people are told. Many York homes take a 32-amp charger on an existing service. Upgrading becomes the right call when the service is 60 amps, when the panel is a format you cannot buy breakers for, or when you are adding other large loads at the same time.
