How an Etobicoke Call Runs

Electrician feeding service conductors into an exterior meter base
A failed service entrance is the one emergency that needs both of us: Toronto Hydro to isolate at the pole or the meter, and a licensed contractor to make the repair and file the notification.
01

Triage on the phone

Some faults need you to shut something off right now; some can safely wait for daylight. We'll tell you which one you've got before we quote you anything.

02

Dispatch west

Etobicoke is a long district — Rexdale to Long Branch is a real drive. We plan the route around where you actually are rather than sending whoever is free.

03

Find the real fault

Aluminum-era failures hide behind cover plates. We find the actual failed termination rather than swapping the device and hoping.

The Etobicoke Emergency List

Burning Smell at an Outlet

The signature aluminum-wiring failure. Decades of expansion and contraction loosen a termination, resistance builds, and the heat eventually finds something combustible.

Scorched or Warm Cover Plates

A warm switch plate is not normal. In Markland Wood, Eringate and the rest of the 1961–80 belt, it usually means a connection is failing behind it.

Federal Pioneer Panel Faults

Common in Etobicoke's post-war stock. Breakers that won't reset, buzzing, or heat at the panel all warrant a look now rather than later.

The connection that fails firstA third of Etobicoke's housing was built between 1961 and 1980, when aluminum branch wiring was standard. It is permitted and it is not a defect — but it expands and loosens at the terminations, and a loose termination is what produces the warm cover plate or the flickering circuit at midnight.

Lakeshore Flooding

Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch sit low and have flooded before. Water near a panel means the utility disconnects before anyone works on it.

Condo Tower In-Suite Failures

Humber Bay Shores and Etobicoke Centre are almost entirely high-rise. We carry the insurance certificates and know how building access works after hours.

Kingsway Century-Home Wiring

The 1920s Kingsway houses run original wiring under beautiful finishes. When it fails, the repair has to respect both the fault and the plaster.

Whose Problem Is It?

Street dark? Grid outage — report it to Toronto Hydro on 416-542-8000, option 1 (24/7) and watch their outage map. Only your home? The fault is downstream of the meter, which makes it yours and ours, not the utility's: 647-406-7046.

Worth knowing before storm season: the mast, weatherhead, clevis and meter base belong to the homeowner. Toronto Hydro owns the service wire and the meter. A mast pulled off a Long Branch bungalow means the utility can't reconnect until a licensed contractor repairs it and the ESA authorizes re-energization. One Etobicoke-specific wrinkle: Toronto Hydro caps overhead service at 200 amps, so if the repair is being combined with an upgrade past that, the service converts to underground — a bigger job worth knowing about at quoting time, not halfway through.

Toronto Hydro handles the isolation, at the pole or at the meter. We handle everything from the mast down — and on a failed service entrance both have to happen, in that order, before work can safely start.

What Fails in Etobicoke — and Why

A third of Etobicoke’s homes were built between 1961 and 1980, which overlaps the years aluminum branch wiring was standard. Aluminum isn’t inherently dangerous and Ontario’s code still permits it — but the failure point is at the terminations, where decades of expansion and contraction loosen connections. A loose aluminum termination behind an outlet is a classic cause of the warm cover plate, the scorch mark, and the burning smell that brings us out at 2 a.m.

Etobicoke Emergency FAQs

My outlet smells like burning plastic. How urgent is this?

Very. That smell is hot polymer, which means a connection is failing and generating enough heat to cook the device around it. Switch that circuit off at the panel if you can do it safely, don't use the outlet, and call. In Etobicoke's aluminum-wired housing this is the single most common cause of an emergency call, and it's the one that starts fires.

Is aluminum wiring the reason this keeps happening?

Often, yes — though the wiring itself isn't the villain. Ontario's code permits aluminum, and the ESA's own position is that it's safe with proper connections. The failure point is the terminations, which loosen over decades, and it gets worse when someone has swapped in copper-only devices during a cosmetic update. The fix is copper pigtailing with correctly rated connectors at every device, documented with an ESA certificate.

Can you get into my Humber Bay condo at night?

Usually. It depends on your building's rules more than on us — we carry the certificates of insurance property managers require and we're used to booking access and elevators. Call and we'll work out with you what your building will allow at that hour.

Should I keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping?

No. A breaker that trips once is doing its job. One that trips repeatedly is telling you there's an overload, a short or a failing breaker, and resetting it over and over removes the protection while the underlying fault keeps heating something up. If it's paired with heat or smell, treat it as urgent.

Do you cover Rexdale and the north end too?

Yes, across the whole district — Rexdale, Kingsview Village and Thistletown through to the Kingsway and the lakeshore. It's a large area, so telling us your cross-streets when you call helps us route the closest crew.
