EV Charging for East York Homes

East York has the oldest housing of any area we serve — 78.8% of it predates 1981 and 48.8% predates 1961. For charger work that means the capacity question is real here more often than anywhere else, and it splits sharply between the detached streets of Leaside and the rest.

Capacity checked, not assumed

With stock this old, service sizes vary enormously street to street. We calculate rather than estimate.

Leaside driveways

Leaside's detached houses mostly have private drives and garages, which makes for clean, short installs.

Older services upgraded once

Where a charger genuinely needs more service, we look at everything else you are planning so the work happens once.

Honest about apartments

Thorncliffe Park is high-rise. A charger there is a building decision, not a homeowner one — we will tell you that rather than quote it.

East York's Housing, Era by Era

East York was built in distinct waves, and each one behaves differently when you add a charger.

Leaside, 1929-1938

Leaside went from 68 houses in 1929 to 328 built in 1938 alone. That build-out produced solid detached homes with driveways — good for charging, but with original service sizes that frequently need review.

Old East York, pre-1961

Just under half of East York predates 1961. Smaller lots, narrower drives, and services that were sized for a house with one fridge and no air conditioning.

Thorncliffe Park

Roughly thirty towers built through the 1960s and 70s on the former racetrack lands, with essentially no detached housing. Charging there runs through the building, not through a homeowner's panel.

How an East York Install Runs

01

Establish what the service actually is

On stock this old, the label on the panel and the real service size are not always the same thing. We verify.

02

Calculate and advise

Load calculation, then a straight recommendation: charger as-is, charger with load management, or service upgrade — in that order of preference.

03

Install and inspect

Dedicated circuit, tested under load, ESA notification filed under our licence and the inspection attended.

East York EV Charging FAQs

Can a Leaside house take an EV charger?

Usually, yes. Leaside's detached homes generally have driveways and garages, which keeps the run short. The variable is the service — many are still at their original size, so a load calculation comes first. Where it is tight, load management often avoids an upgrade entirely.

I live in a Thorncliffe Park apartment. Can you install a charger?

Not as a homeowner job. Charging in a high-rise runs through the building's electrical infrastructure and the corporation's process, not through an individual unit's panel. We would rather tell you that plainly than take a deposit for something that cannot proceed.

My house is from the 1930s. Is the wiring a problem for a charger?

The charger circuit itself is new, so old branch wiring does not prevent it. What matters is the service size and the condition of the panel the new breaker lands in. On 1930s East York houses we frequently find both need review, which is worth knowing before you order a car.

Is East York the same as the Danforth?

No — East York's southern boundary sits several blocks north of Danforth Avenue. If you are right on the Danforth you are most likely in old Toronto, though the electrical realities are similar and we work both.

Do I need a 200-amp service?

Not necessarily. Plenty of East York homes run a 32-amp charger on 100 amps, particularly where heating, cooking and hot water are gas. An upgrade becomes right when the service is 60 amps, the panel is obsolete, or you are adding other large loads.
