EV Charging for Oakville Homes

Oakville has among the highest EV adoption in the GTA and the housing to support it — large detached homes, attached garages and, in the lakeside neighbourhoods, some of the highest household incomes in the country. The local rules are stricter than the provincial minimum, and that is what most out-of-town contractors get wrong here.

Load calculation, pools included

Oakville homes carry heavy discretionary load. Pool equipment and air conditioning count, and we calculate with them in.

Oakville Hydro's rules respected

All new and replaced services here go underground. If a charger triggers a service change, that is the starting point, not a surprise.

Nothing run above a pool

Oakville prohibits conductors above pools — stricter than the provincial Code. It directly affects how an outdoor charger feed is routed.

Finish that suits the house

On homes at this level the install has to look deliberate. Concealed routes, tidy terminations, equipment that suits the elevation.

Oakville's Local Rules, and Why They Matter

Three Oakville-specific requirements change how charger work is planned here.

Oakville: what we actually findOakville Hydro territory. All new and replaced services go underground, indoor meters must move outside on upgrade, and no conductors may run above a pool.

Underground services only

Oakville Hydro requires all new and replaced services to be underground, regardless of size. There is no overhead fallback, so any service change that a charger triggers includes civil work from the outset.

Indoor meters must relocate

As in Toronto, an indoor meter has to move outdoors when the service is upgraded. On Oakville's older lakeside homes that is a real piece of exterior work.

No conductors above pools

Oakville applies a rule stricter than the provincial Code: no conductors are permitted above pools. For a charger feed heading to a detached garage or a driveway past a pool, that dictates the route.

How an Oakville Install Runs

01

Assess including the outdoor plan

We look at the panel, the parking, and anything outdoors — pool, landscape lighting, outbuildings — that constrains the route.

02

Calculate and route

Load calculation with pool and air conditioning included, then a route that respects the pool clearance rule and keeps the run concealed.

03

Install, notify, correct promptly

Dedicated circuit and commissioning, ESA notification under our licence. Oakville expects deficiencies corrected quickly, and we work to that.

Oakville EV Charging FAQs

Does Oakville have different rules for EV charger installation?

The charger circuit itself follows the Ontario Electrical Safety Code as everywhere. What differs is Oakville Hydro's service rules — all new and replaced services go underground, indoor meters must relocate outdoors on upgrade — and a local prohibition on conductors above pools, which affects how an outdoor feed is routed.

Can I run a charger feed to a garage past my pool?

Not above the pool. Oakville is stricter than the provincial Code on this and prohibits conductors above pools outright. The feed has to be routed around, which is entirely workable but needs planning before anything is trenched.

What if my Oakville home needs a service upgrade for the charger?

Then it goes underground — Oakville Hydro does not permit overhead for new or replaced services at any size. That means trenching and restoration are part of the job from the start, and if your meter is currently indoors it will have to move outside.

Do Oakville's larger homes need a bigger charger?

Not usually. Charger size is set by what the vehicle accepts, not by house size. What large Oakville homes do change is the load calculation — pool equipment, extensive air conditioning and sometimes electric heat in an addition all reduce the headroom available.

How quickly do deficiencies have to be corrected?

Oakville works to a short deficiency-correction window, so anything flagged at inspection needs dealing with promptly rather than at leisure. We schedule with that in mind rather than treating an inspection date as the end of the job.
