EV Charging for Mississauga Homes

Mississauga’s housing works well for EV charging. Of roughly 244,575 dwellings, 37.1% are single detached — mostly with attached garages and driveways long enough that the car parks where you want it. The two things worth getting right here are the load calculation and, if the service does change, knowing what Alectra does and does not charge for.

Calculation before hardware

Detached Mississauga homes often have central air, sometimes a pool. Those loads count, so the calculation is not a formality.

Attached garages, short runs

Most installs here are a straightforward run from panel to garage wall — the cheapest configuration there is.

Alectra's free isolation

If a service upgrade is needed, Alectra residential customers generally get one free isolation and re-energisation a year. That removes a cost Toronto homeowners pay.

Long driveways handled properly

Where the car parks well away from the house, conductor sizing has to account for voltage drop over the run — not just the breaker rating.

What Mississauga Homeowners Should Know

Three local factors shape charger work here more than anything else.

Open residential breaker panel with labelled circuits and colour-coded conductors
Mississauga: what we actually findAlectra Utilities territory. Residential customers generally get one free isolation and re-energisation per year — worth knowing if the service has to change.

One free isolation a year

Alectra generally allows residential customers one free isolation and re-energisation annually. Where a charger triggers a service upgrade, that removes a utility charge Toronto homeowners pay as a matter of course.

Newer stock, better capacity

Mississauga's detached housing skews newer than Toronto's, so 100-amp and 200-amp services are the norm rather than 60. Capacity problems are less common — but pools, hot tubs and electric heat in additions still consume headroom.

Check your own breakers first

Before assuming a supply problem, check your panel. Alectra's territory covers a lot of ground and a tripped breaker looks identical to an outage from inside the house.

How a Mississauga Install Runs

01

Site visit and load calculation

We look at the panel, the garage and the driveway, and calculate the service properly including air conditioning and any pool equipment.

02

Hardware matched to the house

A 32-amp charger suits almost every household. We only recommend 48 amps where the car can use it and the service can supply it.

03

Install, notify, commission

Dedicated circuit, charger mounted and tested under load, ESA notification filed under our licence.

Mississauga Neighbourhoods We Serve

We handle EV charger installation right across Mississauga. If your street is not listed, it almost certainly still counts — see the service in full or take a look at our Mississauga electricians page.

Mississauga EV Charging FAQs

Does Alectra charge to disconnect power for a service upgrade?

Alectra residential customers generally get one free isolation and re-energisation per year. That is a meaningful difference from Toronto Hydro, which charges for isolation as a published standard service charge. Confirm your own entitlement with Alectra before scheduling.

Can my Mississauga home take a Level 2 charger?

Most can. The detached stock here skews newer than Toronto's, so 100-amp and 200-amp services are normal. What eats headroom is central air, a pool, a hot tub or electric heat in an addition — all of which count in the load calculation.

My driveway is long. Does that change the install?

It changes the conductor, not the concept. Over a long run, voltage drop has to stay within limits, which can mean a larger conductor than the breaker rating alone would suggest. Getting that wrong shows up as a charger that underperforms rather than one that fails.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Mississauga?

You need an ESA notification, not a municipal permit. Electrical work in Ontario is regulated by the Electrical Safety Authority regardless of which municipality you are in. We file it under our licence and attend the inspection.

Can you install a charger and a pool circuit at the same time?

Yes, and it is usually sensible to do the load calculation once for both. Pool and hot tub work carries its own ESA requirements and its own inspection, so planning them together avoids paying twice for overlapping work.
