EV Charging for Etobicoke Homes

Etobicoke is, on balance, the easiest part of the GTA to put a charger into. The post-war subdivisions were built with attached garages and generous driveways, which usually means a short run from the panel to the car. The complication here is not geometry — it is what the 1960s and 1970s used for branch wiring.

Short runs from the panel

Attached garages mean the charger is frequently within a few metres of the panel. That is the cheapest install there is.

Aluminum-aware terminations

Much of Etobicoke's 1961-80 stock has aluminum branch wiring. Terminations are where it fails, and a charger circuit is not the place to be casual about it.

Load calculation before hardware

We calculate the service first. Etobicoke's newer subdivisions often have room; the older pockets near the lake frequently do not.

Outdoor-rated where it belongs

Driveway installs mean equipment rated for the location and cable management that still works in February.

What Etobicoke's Housing Means for Charging

Etobicoke splits into two quite different electrical eras, and which one you are in changes the job.

The 1961-80 aluminum belt

A third of Etobicoke's homes were built between 1961 and 1980, when aluminum branch wiring was common. Aluminum is permitted by the Code and is not inherently a hazard — it fails at terminations. Any panel work around a charger circuit needs the right devices and technique.

Pre-1961 near the lake

Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch carry older stock — 28.6% of Etobicoke predates 1961 overall. Smaller services are common here and capacity is the first question.

Markland Wood and the west

Areas like Markland Wood are overwhelmingly pre-1981 but only 19.3% pre-1961, which is the sweet spot: large lots, attached garages, and services that are usually adequate.

How an Etobicoke Install Runs

01

Look at the service and the wiring era

We establish the service size and what the branch wiring is before quoting. In Etobicoke those two facts drive everything.

02

Calculate, then choose hardware

Load calculation under the Code, then a charger sized to what the service and the car can actually use.

03

Install and notify

Dedicated circuit, correct terminations for the conductor material, ESA notification filed under our licence and the inspection met.

Etobicoke EV Charging FAQs

Does aluminum wiring stop me getting an EV charger?

No. A charger runs on its own new circuit, which will be copper. Aluminum matters for the existing branch circuits and for how anything is terminated inside the panel — it is permitted by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and ESA explicitly calls 'aluminum is recalled or inherently a fire hazard' a myth. It needs correct devices and technique, not removal.

How much does a charger install cost in Etobicoke?

Where the panel has capacity and the garage is attached, these are among the least expensive installs we do — the run is short and the route is simple. We give a fixed price after seeing the panel and the parking spot rather than quoting a range that cannot account for either.

Can a 1970s Etobicoke house take a Level 2 charger?

Frequently yes. Homes from that era often have 100-amp services, and a gas-heated house with gas cooking and gas hot water usually has room for a 32-amp charger. It still needs calculating, and the panel terminations need checking if the branch wiring is aluminum.

Do you install chargers in the Kingsway and Princess-Rosethorn?

Yes, regularly. Those areas tend to have larger homes and more electrical load already in place, so the load calculation matters more, not less — particularly where there is air conditioning, a pool or electric heat in an addition.

Will I need a service upgrade?

Only if the calculation says so. Many Etobicoke homes do not. Where it is tight, load management is usually the cheaper route, and we will tell you that before quoting an upgrade.
